Connotea is an online reference management service for scientists, researchers, and clinicians,  similar to, del.icio.us where users can save links to their favourite websites, and share them with colleagues.

Diigo

This is another social bookmarking tool, with the additional feature that you can annotate WebPages or pdf's. These annotations can be shared or kept private for your own use.

Doodle

Doodle is a simple way of scheduling meetings, and is particularly useful if you have people who don't share a common calendar or system. Very handy in trying to get a group of busy people to agree on specific date. Simple to set up and very easy to use. Could be used for Arranging tutorials, meetings and discussions. And its free of charge.

Intute is a free Web service aimed at students, teachers, and researchers in UK. Intute provides access to online resources, via a large database of resources. Each resource is reviewed by an academic specialist in the subject.  In  June 2008 Intute provided 123,381 records. Intute is not to be confused with a simple search engine - it is more like a hand-built directory of 'the best-of-the-web, for academics'.

Panoramio is a geolocation-oriented photo sharing website. The site's goal is to allow Google Earth users to learn more about a given area by viewing the photos that other users have taken at that place.  Could see a lot of Potential for geology and geography departments, as well as archaeology.

The Visual Thesaurus is an interactive dictionary and thesaurus. I find it helpful the with creative process, helps with creative block and is good way for generating new ideas. I'm sure there are many applicatations for this other than the exploration of language.
