Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

Travel - Thailand

boxing_thumbAs the night progressed the fighters level increased, with knockouts the order of the night. Shoichi keeps asking if I would like to train, but the full contact sparring kind of puts me off. I’d end up with a broken nose on my first day.

Blackout Mae Sariang

Travel - Thailand

It rained today. That’s the first time I’ve seen rain since we were in Malawi, in January. Funny in Scotland you see so much rain that you wish it would just stop for a while. Here it’s almost a relief, as it was a bit cooler with the rain.

Southern Thailand islands and Ko Samui

Travel - Thailand

samui_thumbPlaying pool and lots of drinking beer and cocktails. Three points for guessing what cocktails I’ve been having - so predictable I know. It’s pretty touristy down here, but the scenery is great. We have dinner sitting on the beach each night; you pick your food from the iced tray of seafood then it goes on the barbeque.

Vang Vieng tubing and beer Laos

Travel - Laos

vangvieng_thumb

Vang Vieng is famous for its ‘happy shakes’ and ‘happy pizzas’ or there’s the ‘Ecstatic shake’ if you’re feeling like getting, well, ecstatic I suppose.  We saw a few dudes in very ‘un-happy’ states from the shakes. The owner of the restaurant that sold them to them had to look after them all night, and it didn’t look like the best place to be freaking out on hallucinogenic pizzas and milkshakes.

Kayak to Vientiane from Vang Vieng

Travel - Laos

vientiane_thumb

When I got washed out of the rapids, I kind of expected one of our guides to either be there or motion for where to go, instead I just got washed downstream and eventually swam towards the shore.

Luang Prabang

Travel - Laos

luang_thumb

This time we’ve been lucky and have spent the past few days here with a bunch of really cool people.  It’s almost impossible to lose each other as there’s really only one bar and one main street.

Pak Beng to Luang Prabang

Travel - Laos

mekong_thumb

We stumbled off the boat to another onslaught of tuk tuk drivers and guest house touts all after your custom. It has to be said the tuk tuk drivers here are shocking, we saw about eight people bundled into the back of a tuk tuk, only to be driven 200 metres down the street and charged 20 baht each for the ride.

Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island

Travel - Vietnam

halong_thumbWe spent a night on the boat and two nights on Cat Ba Island. The night on the boat was cool, very romantic - the sound of the waves lapping against the side of the boat, the scrabbling of rats trying to get into your room, awwwwww. Cat Ba Island is the only inhabited island in Halong bay.

four million motorcycles in Hanoi

Travel - Vietnam

hanoi_thumb

We spent the first night in the historic ‘Old Quarter’ and it’s enough just to stroll the narrow streets to get a good feel for the city. The buildings all seem to be piled on top of each other with no sense of town planning at all.

Sapa - Northern Vietnam

Travel - Vietnam

sapa_thumb

An optimist might believe that Sapa is the place to come to wander amongst terraced rice paddies and happen upon a remote hill tribe or two.  The reality is slightly different.

Travel Jabs

Travel - General Travel

jabs_thumbAnd that’s about it for travel jabs, you still need anti malarial pills I’ve opted for doxycycline (6 months worth), there are couple of options for malaria pills but this seems most commonly used with very few side effects (You may become more sensitive to the sun) its also used as an antibiotic so will help you out with little cuts etc and any other dodgy bugs you pick up along the way

Yellow Fever Jab do I need it?

Travel - General Travel

I may need Yellow Fever, it appears that even though i will not be at risk from Yellow Fever, it could cause trouble crossing borders in Mozambique without one,Border guards maybe tempted to bribe you if you dont have it, although im sure if they are going to try and bribe you they will do it anyway.
